Nashville Voyager Community Highlights: Meet Holly Cheshier of J. Holly Cheshier Photography

Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.

I picked up my first camera when I was just 12 years old. It was a Canon T70, handed down from my dad, and I instantly fell in love. That camera still sits proudly on a shelf in my room as a reminder of where it all began. I studied photography in high school and college, but life took me in a different direction for a while—until I found my way back behind the lens.

In 2010, I had my first feature published in TAPS Paramagazine with a piece on Wolfe Manor, followed by several more publications. At the time, I was traveling across the U.S. for events tied to the show Ghost Hunters (my ex-husband was on the cast), and I brought my camera along for the ride. Being surrounded by such a creative and passionate group reignited something in me. I started experimenting with different styles and approaches, and before long, I was contributing more and more to the magazine.

Then came a tough moment. My work was shown—without my knowledge—to a couple of “professional” photographers. Their feedback? That I’d never make it as a professional. It crushed me. But instead of quitting, I let that criticism fuel me.

By 2013, I was navigating a major life transition: from stay-at-home mom to single parent, going through a divorce, and trying to find work. One day at my son’s school, I mentioned needing a job—and as fate would have it, one of the most inspiring women I’ve ever met overheard me. That conversation led me to the Orange County Register—not as a photographer, but as an event coordinator. Since then, I’ve worked with her at four different companies, and we still collaborate to this day.

While at the Register, a manager found out I was a photographer and asked if I could step in for an upcoming awards event. I jumped at the chance—and nailed it. That opportunity opened doors to years of events, photo assignments, and publication work with OCR and its affiliates.

In 2016, I joined SilverLakes Sports Park (again with my amazing mentor), starting out as her assistant. Before long, I was documenting the park’s development, coordinating events, and—most exciting of all—photographing sports! From soccer and rugby to equestrian competitions and my first-ever concert, I was finally shooting what I loved. Some of my images still hang in the on-site restaurant and are featured in marketing and signage.

Then came 2019 and COVID. I, like many others, was laid off. But that pause gave me clarity—it was time to take the leap and go full-time with photography. I earned my Part 107 drone license and landed a contract shooting real estate, which I still do today. Once live events returned, I found myself—once again—with my incredible boss, photographing for Activated Events: Boots In The Park, Coastal Country Jam, Taco Fest, and more. To date, I’ve photographed over 150 artists and loved every minute of it.

In 2021, I entered a fox photo I’d taken, titled Stitch, into a contest and won 2nd place. That image later won another award and remains one of my all-time favorites.

Today, I work with five amazing companies—two in real estate, Activated Events, Disneyland, and my own business. I absolutely love what I do. Photography isn’t just my job—it’s my passion. And I feel incredibly lucky to capture moments that mean something to people.

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?

LOL—has it ever been a smooth road? Definitely not! But honestly, I don’t think it ever is when you’re chasing something you love.

As a woman working primarily in a male-dominated field, I’ve had to work hard to be taken seriously. There’s been a fair share of impostor syndrome along the way—and truthfully, that feeling never fully goes away. I’m constantly pushing myself to grow, improve, and prove that I belong in this space. It can be exhausting at times, but it’s also been incredibly motivating.

Every challenge has made me stronger—not just as a photographer, but as a person. I’m always diving into new techniques, testing out gear, refining my editing, and finding new ways to elevate my work. I’ve learned to use the obstacles as fuel, and they’ve helped shape the photographer I am today.

Please tell us more about your business or organization. What should we know? What do you do, what do you specialize in / what are you known for? What sets you apart from others? What are you most proud brand wise? What do you want our readers to know about your brand, offerings, services, etc?

I’m a Southern California-based photographer and creative graphic designer with a passion for capturing meaningful moments and turning them into lasting memories. I specialize in a wide range of photography, including fine art, landscapes, nature and wildlife, sports/action, school portraits, event and concert coverage, engagements, product, commercial/editorial work, and photojournalism. Basically, if it doesn’t involve a wedding, I’m your girl!

What sets me apart is the experience I create for my clients. I’m known for helping people feel relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera—no stiff poses, no stress—just fun, natural, and beautiful results. My goal is always to bring out the authentic energy of the moment, whether I’m on the sidelines of a sporting event or capturing a quiet connection between two people.

I’m especially proud of the work I do in my community. For seven years, I volunteered my photography services for the local high school boys’ lacrosse team, and I currently donate my time to the Norco Mounted Posse Rodeo Queens. Giving back through my art has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

At the heart of it, my brand is about storytelling, connection, and capturing the moments that matter most—big or small. Whether it’s for your business, your family, or your personal passion, I bring creativity, heart, and a whole lot of hustle to every project.
